Culture Hub Bangkok
Cultural Terminal of the 21st Century

With information, knowledge and culture more widely shared than ever before, the role of the cultural institution has begun to take on a new meaning in its relationship to the city, and the citizen. The traditional functions of such places, historically focused on the task of archiving, supporting and disseminating information, now expand to include new, active uses which encourage a greater interaction between the institution and the public.

The studio is a cooporation with staff and students of the School of Architecture and Design at King Mongkut‘s University of Technology Thonburi, Bangkok.

Die Lehrveranstaltungen werden online und ggf. mit Präsenzanteilen durchgeführt.
Die Bearbeitung ist sowohl in 2er-Teams als auch einzeln möglich.

  • Housing in question
  • 2nd half of semester
Professionalisierung

Wohnungsfrage
Small space – Big possibilities

  • Do What You Want! Independent Study
A: Kulturelle / historische Kenntnisse

We encourage students to undertake an independent study with us—to be tutored on a 1 to 1 basis. You define topic, scope and format. Take something you've always hated and wanted to find out more about. Something that interests you for other reasons. Take a contemporary spatial controversy or similar. Produce a podcast, documentary, or a written piece of work. We are particularly interested in questions around collective / social / public housing, public space and the spatial dimensions of social movements. If you are interested in pursuing this route, come prepared with a 1-page outline of your chosen topic of interest. Tutorials to be arranged by appointment to take place typically in bi-weekly intervals.

Deadline for expressions of interest: 16.10.2020, 12:00 h
Supervision: Prof. Dr. Tatjana Schneider

Recommendation of participation:
Note: This is not a regular module or seminar. You define topic and format. In case of interest, submit a proposal as per specification above by 16th of October.

Launch event: 19.10.2020 at 12:00
Regular appointment: Monday, 14:00 - 16:00
Closing date: 22.02.2021

  • PLANNING AND DESIGN OF HEALTHCARE FACILITIES
C: Konstruieren und Bauen

PLANNING AND DESIGN OF HEALTHCARE FACILITIES SoSe 2020

Capacity:
20 vacancies (open to master and bachelor students from architecture and sustainable design)

Topic:
The seminar will introduce students to the concepts of planning and design of healthcare facilities, adopting specific methodologies for teaching the design of complex buildings. We will use for the seminar programme case studies (hospitals) from resource-limited settings and armed conflict areas, such as Haiti and Afghanistan among others. The methodology of the seminar intends to enhance students’ knowledge for the analyse of the design of hospitals and to make students capable to provide informed design decisions for healthcare facilities projects. In addition to the study of the historic background of the hospital's development until the understanding of the concepts of the "hospital of the future", as a final task, students have to develop a design proposal to improve one hospital (a selected case study) overall functionality and to develop a design proposal for a new surgical department.

The seminar is a cooperation between EPOS Health Management and TU BS IIKE.

• Kickoff meeting: ?

The seminar will be held by Guilherme COELHO, Architect and Senior Consultant for Healthcare Infrastructure.

Cities have always been hubs of attraction for trade, culture, productivity, social connections and much more. Although they are the center of global development, they have to face significant challenges such as climate change, natural disasters, epidemics, crime and poverty. Their central role continues to grow in importance: by 2050, two-thirds of the world's population is expected to live in urban areas.

What role can we as architects play in the redesign of urban life? How can we develop new inspiring visions for alternative models of cities?

KE LET'S GO OUTSIDE tries to answer these questions with special attention to the outbreak of COVID-19. If we imagine a society where physical distance and a new mobility is the new normality, how should public spaces change?
In this project we want to create visionary concepts for an alternative public space.

  • SE | DIVERSITY
D: Entwerfen - Stadt und Landschaft

The production, editing and publishing of videos has become a pervasive cultural technique since smartphones and YouTube and can also be applied on the social-spatial subject.

Under the thematic focus "Diversity", students are to be trained in the use of video-media in order to experimentally investigate the topic of gender, inclusion and equal opportunities on TU Braunschweig’s campus.

The outcomes can range from atmospheric film sequences to critical and targeted analysis to film manifestos and open up new perspectives on the "Campus of Diversity". The line between reality and utopian fiction can be blurry.

A basic knowledge of film and camera techniques and the use of video programs are mandatory. After an analysis phase on the chosen topic, the focus is on developing the storyboard content and the film’s concept. The results will be presented during the "initial week" of the Winter Semester 2020.

Professionalisierung

For a long time now, it is not just metropolises like Berlin or Hamburg that are struggling with the shortage of housing and unaffordable rents. Even smaller cities, especially cities with universities, have faced this challenge: to create more residential space with high quality, flexible structures and at reasonable prices. This semester our focus is on Braunschweig on the TU campus and it’s surroundings. How is our campus designed and which challenges does it face? Is it possible to combine living with contemporary needs of education while creating a lively environment? We are looking for spatial forms of student living, as well as other formats that embrace a wide variety of uses. The small design area should answer to questions on how living, working and researching practices and patterns should come together. How can the multidimensional structural diversity of this place be answered. If we consider that contemporary educational institutions serve as a fruitful meeting ground of people coming from different countries and backgrounds, it is crucial to rethink the space of the individual and the space of the communal.

Creating exciting, liveable and sustainable cities requires increasingly complex information and approaches. Different disciplines work together to collect, analyse and evaluate this data. Close interdisciplinary cooperation and a fundamental mutual understanding are the necessary basis for innovative and creative solution ideas.

This seminar offers a first introduction, in which technical and applied, methodical basics are taught. With the help of geodata in 2D and 3D, students will be able to create well-founded and meaningful design fundamentals. On this basis, designs, scenarios and planning can be built upon in order to answer even challenging urban questions such as: "What influence could my design have on the built environment? Which location emphasises the architectural significance of my solitaire?

Important: This seminar provides basic knowledge on which the seminar "dust2cloud" in the summer semester 2021 is based and is compulsory for participation.

It takes place in three blocks - in the meantime, you will work on small tasks.
Consultations can be held on Thursdays.

  • 3D Printing Housing Hack
Professionalisierung

Hosted by LafargeHolcim, the "3D Printing Housing Hack" is an international competition (multi-stage hackathon) involving teams of students from the world's most prestigious universities. The aim is to use 3D concrete printing technology to develop solutions to improve future housing and construction efficiency.
The brief is to redesign and optimize the structure of a 2-story mid-rise residential building, focussing on more effective material use, extended design freedom and shorter construction time. Also, it will be a plus for the project to tackle aspects of thermal performance, acoustics and fire resistance. A rough estimation of the construction cost of the optimized design will be required, and will have to be competitive with a traditional reference building.
The approach will be focused on developing innovative structural designs to leverage the advantages of 3d printing while addressing its current technological hurdles. The key innovations in the designs will be proven through concrete 3D printing prototypes.
LafargeHolcim will offer a 15.000 € total prize pool and will also help the winning team for the construction of a scale 1:1 prototype by supporting to identify a client or contracting authority to 3D print their project, communicating around the pilot project and providing free 3D printing material, subject to a documented request, until the end of the realization of the project.
High-profile partners like UN-Habitat, Witteveen & Bos, Fondation des Ponts and COBOD will support the teams during the design and prototyping phase. Each team is accompanied by an ITE expert the field of 3D printing.

Recommendation of participation:
The knowledge of digital design and fabrication techniques (Rhino, Grasshopper, 3D Printing, Robotic Fabrication) is not a prerequisite, but it is of great advantage. Interested persons are asked to list their prior knowledge and send it to the design supervisors (n.hack@tu-braunschweig.de).
Please find a detailed description in the attachment.

  • Reframing Galeria
Professionalisierung

In many city centres, the department stores were once the epitome of flourishing prosperity and the symbol of the unlimited availability of goods par excellence. The massive building volumes in the pedestrian zones still characterise the image of the inner cities to a considerable extent today.
However, in times of online trade and neo-liberal restructuring of labour, the former temples of consumption are increasingly losing their importance, as goods are supposedly offered at lower prices, more conveniently and in greater variety via Amazon, Zalando and Co. Most recently, the Corona crisis has weakened the already ailing industry to such an extent that department chain operators such as Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof, threatened by insolvency, will soon close 47 department shops across Germany. Economically weakened, however, the crisis also offers the opportunity not only to critically question our consumer behaviour and the "take, make, consume, dispose" mentality, but also to fundamentally reflect on future forms of social and economic organisation of space and society.
Yet, what are we going to do with this architectural heritage that the consumer society has left us with the now empty department shops?
Instead of a resource-intensive demolition and the subsequent new construction, according to familiar patterns, this Experimental Design is intended to create alternative circular material economies (reduce, reuse, recycle), new concepts of use (e.g. co-working, urban agriculture, housing, cultural centres, theatres, museums, schools, day-care centres, educational institutions, etc.), and different types governance (e.g. cooperative, communal, cooperative) for the Galeria Kaufhaus building on Bohlweg in Braunschweig.

Recommendation of participation:
The Experimental Design Studio is planned as a presence course and is conducted in a cooperation between ITE and GTAS.
The Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture and the City (GTAS) offers 3 seminars on this topic. Participation in one of the three seminars offered (Interventions-Dr. Martin Peschken; Work-Niloufar Tajeri; KAR(STADT)WERT / performative recording practices-Diana Lucas Drogan) or the comprehensive accompanying programme (lectures and workshops) is strongly recommended.
