Schule für Tanz und Performance

"Never demolish, never remove or replace, always add, transform and reuse!" - Lacaton Vassal

  • Climate Walks

  • International sustainable development in buildings and urban districts
C: Konstruieren und Bauen

The goal of this seminar is to encourage students having an international view with the development of researches and practices in the field of buildings and urban districts.

Therefore, the seminar will be organized as two parts, which are "group research" and "lecture":

In Group research, students will work in group of 2 students and take focus on one selected country. Current status of energy consumption, carbon emissions, energy policies, energy-saving standards, applicable technologies, and excellent demonstration buildings/districts will be reported and shared as presentation.

Besides of student group researches, we will invite experienced architects and engineers in the semester program of IGS to give lectures about their practices and share their experiences in this field.

This seminar will start as online course. Further information will be sent by email to participants.

  • Technology of Construction Methods - Traditional Engineering Methods
C: Konstruieren und Bauen

In an international context, traditional construction methods are of great importance with regard to the embodied energy requirements and offer a positive influence on the indoor climate.

Due to the need for highly industrialized building products, some of these methods have been forgotten and with them the potentially energetic benefits.

In the summer semester 2021, we deepen the analysis of how optimization potentials in the overall design planning process of a building can be derived through the use of traditional construction methods in combination with contemporary technical knowledge and the use of low-tech & Sufficiency strategies.

The scope of the investigations is based of the latitudes of the moderately warm climate. Topics such as resource efficiency in architecture or the general CO2 emissions that occurs in society will be used as guidelines for the elaboration. The relation to research and practice is highlighted and deepened in group seminar projects.

The course is related to the transformation of the Hagenmarkt and is intended to offer the opportunity to put the theoretical concepts into practice.

Main objective is to get a feel for the topic of traditional construction methods and to have interesting discussions on this topic.

Further information will be provided in the orientation session.

In cooperation with the Institute for Design and Architectural Strategies (IDAS), a symposium related to this topic is planned on Sylt, in which students are encouraged to participate.

Recommendation of participation:
The content of the course is related to the offer of the Institute for Design and Architectural Strategies (IDAS). It is not necessary to attend both courses.
The prerequisites for participation in the seminar are the passed exams of the courses building physics and building technology.

  • Independent Study BA A3 - MA M1/M2 - MA MFA
Professionalisierung

We encourage non-native German speaking students to undertake an independent study with us–to be tutored on a 1 to 1 basis. Usually, this would be in the form of a written piece of work that takes as its focus a contemporary spatial controversy, which would then be studied predominantly through secondary data (e.g. texts, films, newspaper articles, and so on); though we do also actively encourage field work. We are particularly interested in questions around collective / social / public housing, public space and the spatial dimensions of social movements. If you are interested in pursuing this route, please send a 1-page abstract about your chosen topic of interest, outlining clearly why you are interested in this topic, how you would research it and the references that you have already consulted. Tutorials would be arranged by appointment but would typically be organised in bi-weekly intervals.

PLANNING AND DESIGN OF HEALTHCARE FACILITIES SoSe 2020

Capacity:
20 vacancies (open to master and bachelor students from architecture and sustainable design)

Topic:
The seminar will introduce students to the concepts of planning and design of healthcare facilities, adopting specific methodologies for teaching the design of complex buildings. We will use for the seminar programme case studies (hospitals) from resource-limited settings and armed conflict areas, such as Haiti and Afghanistan among others. The methodology of the seminar intends to enhance students’ knowledge for the analyse of the design of hospitals and to make students capable to provide informed design decisions for healthcare facilities projects. In addition to the study of the historic background of the hospital's development until the understanding of the concepts of the "hospital of the future", as a final task, students have to develop a design proposal to improve one hospital (a selected case study) overall functionality and to develop a design proposal for a new surgical department.

The seminar is a cooperation between EPOS Health Management and TU BS IKE.

  • SE | INSTRUMENTS FOR DIALOGUE
D: Entwerfen - Stadt und Landschaft

How can a public space contribute in creating a dialogue between diverse '' cultures ''?

How often do we deal with reflecting on the true identity of the city dwellers and meeting the needs of the culturally diverse social structure when designing public spaces?

SE INSTRUMENTS FOR DIALOGUE would like to analyze objects of individual cultures and develop new soft and hard strategies, which can be described as "instruments for dialogue". The aim is to promote dialogue, togetherness and cultural exchange in public spaces.

With the help of illustrations and collages, the backgrounds of social groups (migrants, subcultures, diverse identities) are learned and analyzed by the students.

Building on this, strategies are discussed and developed using program diagrams, maps and collages. Soft strategies are available, for example, for temporary or occasional interventions such as street food markets, pop-up gardens, thematic festivals and similar events.

Hard strategies are permanent, structural elements in the city, which are primarily built for various social groups and are intended to enable cultural exchange in the city.

In this way, the focus is on cultural diversity and creative answers and solutions for the questions and problems are developed.

The course can be worked on individually or in a group.

Supervision: Prof. Gabriele G. Kiefer, M.A. Bojana Bjelic

The entire course takes place ONLINE.

  • URBAN LAB WESTSTADT
Professionalisierung

Gropiusstadt in Berlin, Wohnpark Alterlaa in Vienna - large housing complexes from the 1960s and 1970s are contemporary witnesses of late modernism, increasingly coming into the focus of architects and urban planners.

The Weststadt in Braunschweig, developed as a satellite city, is an example of a large-scale settlement from this period. What was once conceived as the city of the future has shortcomings in terms of urban qualities and diversity of use in today's understanding of city.

In the URBAN LAB WESTSTADT, we would like to discover with you the potentials of this large-scale settlement, which is often stigmatized as a dormitory town, and to design spatial visions for a sustainable living for this part of Braunschweig. We are looking for spatial ideas for redensification and for a quarter in which living, working, leisure and retail are mixed. As aspiring architects and urban planners, we ask you to enhance a fantastic urban quarter in the west of Braunschweig by conceive cross-scale designs.

An exchange with citizens and the quarts management of the Weststadt is planned for the starting point of the course.

The topic of redensification is on everyone's mind and absolutely essential if Germany wants to fullfill its land consumption and climate targets. That is why we would like to deal with this topic and take a closer look around Braunschweig: what examples of redensification can one find? Is the strategy of building “better in the centre" already being applied?

Starting with a workshop, in that we will examine strategies of redensification and try to understand them by looking at best-practice examples, the following weeks we will apply what we have learned. At a place of your choice in Braunschweig, you will design a new piece of a sustainable city.

A collaboration with Fridays for future Braunschweig, as well as a discussion and exhibition of the best designs with the city, is planned for the end of the KE!

  • DUST2CLOUD +

In DUST2CLOUD+ we track down the knowledge hidden in plain sight. Cities are complex entities where urban systems and people interact with one another in ways that are often out of sight and appear unpredictable.
Urban and architectural design requires an understanding of this complex interaction. Innovative technologies from the drone to the satellite, the integration of heterogeneous urban data and their modelling, analysis and visualisation in three-dimensional city models based on self-generated point clouds are the keys to understanding urban complexity, from a phenomenon to spatial compositions. Do the analyses lead to unexpected discoveries and surprising insights, or do they provide quantified facts to confirm hypotheses?

In cooperation with students of the Institute of Geodesy and Photogrammetry we acquire extensive theoretical and methodological knowledge and the technical know-how of spatial analysis in workshops with access to state-of-the-art scanning equipment, e.g. LiDAR, in order to explore their meaningful uses in cooperatively developed questions: How does the design relate to built reality? How can the analysis help us to answer current challenges, such as housing shortage, excessive land consumption for private transport, or the consequences of global climate change on urban areas?

An exhibition + discussion at the end of the course is planned.

The romantic feeling of being near the container for old glass, the birds nest as a fairy-tale forest on the sidewalk, the enchantment of the gap between buildings - do you actually perceive what surrounds you, or you surround yourself with what you see?

We think we know the city from A to Z, but we only go from A to B. From our apartment to the supermarket, to the parking lot, to the university, to the train station and back.

In a compact week, we will discover new starting points, explore trails and find new destinations. We walk with our eyes wide open, listening carefully to the stories we encounter.

The aim of the workshop is to focus our eyes and ears on hidden potentials in urban space, away from the routes carved in stone. As a next step, we will use audiovisual installations to make our discoveries explorable for us and others.

We search, find and experiment with alternative methods of urban analysis and would like to observe and evaluate with you, spatial and atmospheric features of a particular urban space.

An exhibition, with an audio walk for interested citizens of Braunschweig, is planned at the end of the course.

The "Digital Building Fabrication Studio" explores the new digital design and fabrication methods that open up novel degrees of freedom in design and construction. In particular, the focus is on the interaction between materials and digitally controlled fabrication processes. The investigations are conducted experimentally using industrial robots, mixed reality, or 3D printers on a 1:1 scale.
Each semester, the design potential of a new innovative digital fabrication process is explored, which always feeds back directly to the Institute's research. For example, in past semesters the studios have explored shotcrete 3D concrete printing, fiberwinding, or robotic ramming with earth.
This year we also plan to experiment with an innovative digital fabrication technique, Injection 3D Concrete Printing, developed at the Institute.
In the studio, the basics of modeling in Rhino and controlling robots using Grasshopper will be taught and tested on our own projects.

Recommendation of participation:
Knowledge of Rhino and Grasshopper is welcome, but not a requirement for participation.
